On Tuesday 10th February the students presented their completed game to an invited audience of students, teachers, governors and other guests.
Year 10 students of St Roberts of newminister have recently taken part in a CLC week in which they focused on designing a game based on ‘safety online’. The game which they created is seen as a learning resource to educate both parents and children about the dangers that can be faced online. The students which were selected to create the game were chosen from GCSE ict classes. The students first spent a day with the year 11’s who created the game tolerance last year they then got to grips with the software and then became mentors to other students in year 10, finally they collectively created different games in small groups which was then put together to create our final piece.
We thoroughly enjoyed this week and we feel that it has been a superb opportunity for us to have been selected out of many students, we also feel that is has greatly improved our ict skills. This week we have learned new and interesting things such as learning to create different game scenes and behaviours to help us to get our message across to our wide audience. We have also learned how to use crazy talk and used it on our games.

Mentors and Year 10 students worked very well today. The day started with students exploring the Think You Know website looking for ideas about Social Networking. They then created a concept map to bring their ideas together as a group. The mentors showed their peers the authoring tool and introduced the different behaviours that they could use.
After lunch each group developed their game using the authoring tool. Working with their mentor, they divided their group into game authors, editors and multimedia creators. Some groups used CrazyTalk to create multimedia content for their game.
On the whole and excellent day with some very high levels of thinking from the students with some well thought out and produced games.
Monday was devoted to the final planning of the 3D game. Students discussed the topics they wanted to include in the game and agreed what was going to happen on each day. They then used the authoring tool to explore the different behaviours. The afternoon was devoted to linking behaviours and looking at adding multimedia content to their game using CrazyTalk and iClone.

During the planning morning on the 28th January 2009 the Year 10 mentors looked at the topic of online safety and all the issues that could arise. This included looking at a number of videos and exploring some of their experiences. They then moved on to looking at Thinking Worlds and the different behaviours they could use in their own 3D game about online safety.
During the week 2nd - 6th February 2009, a group of Year 10 students will be working in the CLC to plan and create a 3D educational game about Online Safety. Leading up to the week, students will be researching the topics related to online safety and planning the thinking and behaviours behind their game. Keep an eye on this blog to see how both the students and their game develops.
